Organizer: David Campden (Event Director)

Map: SAIT / Riley Park

The forecast is sunny and -5ish. With snow likely from the day before, expect some slippery areas, especially on the slopes of the Advanced course. Kensington has lots of great spots for a hot chocolate/hot toddy/hot meal afterwards so take advantage of a classic Calgary Fall day.

Come enjoy the beautiful sun and views in scenic Riley Park. We will provide the course map and set up the control/checkpoints and you visit the checkpoints in the order shown on the map. Please bring a whistle for safety. We will provide timing (SI) finger sticks if you don't have your own (supplies limited). The slopes on the Intermediate and Advanced courses may be slippery due to leaves, so consider wearing spiked shoes if you have them (although there is some pavement and parking lots to cross). NOTE: The bathrooms at Riley Park are closed.

4 courses have been planned (distances are "as the crow flies" so expect to go a bit further):

  • Beginner: 9 controls, 0.9 km long -- Visit each control/checkpoint along a well-defined and mostly flat trail.
  • Novice: 8 controls, 1.5 km long -- A little longer and a bit more map-reading required to find the best routes to each control.
  • Intermediate: 14 controls, 2.8 km -- More hill climbs, longer distance, and more control locations that are off the main trails.
  • Advanced: 18 controls, 4.3 km -- Longer, higher, and with control locations requiring more careful navigation and efficient route choices.

Course notes

The Intermediate and Advanced courses both require crossing roads, so please be careful when doing so.

There will likely be lots of wet leaves on top of grass which can be very slippery, especially on any slopes.

To squeeze the Advanced course into a small area excluding the SAIT campus, a couple of controls are used twice and some of the legs are a little difficult to follow on the map, so double check you are going to the correct control!

Here is what you need to do as early as possible on the day of the event (but continue to monitor your health throughout the day and do not attend if you are feeling unwell):

  1. Submit a completed Individual Declaration of Health for each attendee (only valid for the day the form is submitted). You can also find this form on go.orienteeringcalgary.ca.
  2. Read the guidelines for participation in Foothills Orienteering Club Events during pandemic. Important points in these guidelines include:
    • If you have any COVID-19 symptoms or have had close contact with someone with COVID-19 in the last 14 days, stay home.
    • Practice physical and social distancing including 2m separation from people not within your family or cohort.
    • Bring your own supplies including water as none will be provided.
    • Consider wearing a mask when not out on course.
    • Eliminate contact with communal surfaces at the start and finish areas.
    • Do not touch orienteering flags or ribbons.
    • If using a SI finger stick, place it carefully without touching the unit.
    • Please be sure to follow basic personal hygiene rules and wash/sanitize your hands before and after being on a course.

We will have some sanitizing and personal protective equipment for our volunteers to use as needed, but please bring your own sanitizer, mask, water, and any other equipment you feel would be helpful to protect yourself and others.
  4. Remember that everyone sees the risks and rewards of outdoor sport during a pandemic differently, so please err on the side of caution and help ensure that everyone at the event (especially the general public) is comfortable with the measures you are taking to ensure physical distancing and personal hygiene.
