Organizer: Don Bayly (Event Director)

Map: Banded Peak School

Thank you to Don B for organizing the Banded Peak event! It was very fun to be orienteering on such a unique map. Thanks to all the volunteers: Don B and Marsha for hanging control flags and setting up, Robin for registration and clean up, Suzanne for timing, David C for take down, Don M, Tim and Geoff for control pick-up. Kudos for Geoff for going out twice to get controls! Thanks to Bogi (AOA ED) for organizing the Try-It event. And thanks to all the participants for braving the rain to get out on a forest map:)

Wednesday June 21 Summer Solstice Event at Banded Peak School

We will be re-running selected courses from the WCOC 2022 Forest Sprint event. Having a forest event on the evening of the longest day of the year is a tradition from earlier days of the Foothills Wanderers which in turn was based on Nordic orienteering traditions.

Location: Banded Peak School is on the west side of Highway 22, 1.8 km south of the main intersection at Bragg Creek. Driving time from downtown Calgary is about 45 minutes.

Course Notes:

  • No washrooms are available on site; the nearest ones would be at the Shell gas station in Bragg Creek. Plan accordingly.
  • Please bring your own water and snacks.
  • Parking and check in will be at the school parking lot. A flagged route of about 200 m will lead to the start.
  • The map: Banded Peak School, scale 1:4000, contour interval 2m, made in 2022.
  • The terrain is flat to gently rolling with a mixed forest of pine, spruce and poplar. For the Intermediate and Advanced courses, compass bearings and pace counting will be useful due to the subtle nature of the topographic features.
  • Some of the larger fallen trees are mapped as elongated patches of green. It's possible that a few more trees have fallen since 2022 and are therefore not mapped.

Courses:

  • Beginner (C2) 1.9 km, mostly on trails.
  • Intermediate (C4) 2.1 km, requires navigation off trails.
  • Advanced (C6) 3.0 km, requires navigation off trails.

2023 Wednesday Evening Orienteering (WEO) Series

  • Regular orienteering on Wednesday evenings - this means in-person with control flags and SI units in the terrain from 6:30-8pm on the day of the event.
  • You will need an SI stick; you can borrow one from the club on the night of the event if you do not own one.
  • You will have to pre-register for the events.
    • You can pay for each session separately
    • You can sign up for the series and get a discount
  • The last day to register for each Wednesday event is the Monday evening before it to guarantee we have a map printed for you.
  • You will need to be a 2023 member of Foothills Orienteering (FWOC), a 2023 member of another Canadian orienteering club, or purchase a “day of the event membership”.
  • We will be using Maprun6 so, if you registered for the event, you can run anytime if you do not want to run on the evening of the event.
  • There will be about 20 Wednesday Evenings in the series.

NOTE: After having registered for an event, you can make changes to your course selection on the Interpodia website. Login. Go to "Event Registrations" section in the menu on the left side of the screen. Click on the “Manage” button on the event you want to revise. Click view/edit registration. Click on the edit button on Course Selection. Revise your selection there; for example, if you won't be able to attend unexpectedly, you can choose to get a map PDF instead.
