RESULTS Bowness WEO Wednesday Evening series
May 1st 2024 6:30pm - 8:00pm
Map: Bowness Park + Baker Park
Wednesday Evening Orienteering (WEO) Event
THANK YOU to everyone for taking part on such a wet night
A special Thank you to all the volunteers who turned up early or stayed late on such a cold wet evening:
Marsha, Evelyn, Marion, Vital, Kathryn, David, Riley, Tim, Jonathan, Ewan and Gavan
PICNIC SITE #3
The start will be between the two picnic shelters nearest and west of the parking at Bowness Park. Take the first left when you enter the park and park near the big play structure. Washrooms are supposed to be opening in May. If not, there are port-a-potties adjacent.
In case of inclement weather registration will be undercover, hopefully in one of the shelters.
Safety
We don't expect the park to be too busy next week, but as always please be courteous to other park users. Courses may be near the Bow River. The forecast is cool, so bring warm clothing and dry things to change into.
Intermediate and Long courses: the small water channel along the south side of the park is shown as partly crossable (lighter blue with blue outline) and partly uncrossable (darker blue with black outline). Only cross where its shown as crossable and use caution. The water got deeper since yesterday so the uncrossable section may have enlarged by tomorrow.
Please report back to registration by 8pm whether or not you have completed your course, so that we don't need send out a search party. Controls will be removed from the course at 8pm
Volunteers
I am looking for two people to help with registration for around 45 minutes each - one from 6pm and one from 6:15pm, if possible. And as always, help will be needed to pick up controls after the event - the more the merrier.
Please email [email protected] if you can help
Courses (exact details will be updated by Wednesday - check back here):
- Novice - 2.1km, negligible climb, 13 controls, no traffic, handrails (paths) to follow
- Intermediate - 3.2km, negligible climb, 16 controls, only park traffic, routes have handrail options (paths, vegetation boundaries) with opportunities to short cut. Shoes may get wet.
- Advanced - 3.9km, 40m climb, 24 controls, only park traffic - you may want shoes with good grip and expect them to get wet and muddy
The first "Try-it" event will be next Wednesday May 8th, at the University of Calgary
- Regular orienteering on Wednesday evenings - this means in-person with control flags and SI units in the terrain from 6:30-8pm on the day of the event.
- At this point we are anticipating 20 events but this number is dependent on volunteer course planners.
- You will need an SI stick; you can borrow one from the club on the night of the event if you do not own one.
- You will have to pre-register for the events.
- The last day to register for each Wednesday event is the Monday evening before it to guarantee we have a map printed for you.
- You will need to be a 2024 member of Foothills Orienteering (FWOC), a 2024 member of another Canadian orienteering club, or pay the non-member event fee.
- We will be using Maprun so, if you registered for the event, you can run anytime if you do not want to run on the evening of the event.
- There will be about 20 Wednesday Orienteering Evenings in the series.
Wednesday Orienteering Payment Options
There are two ways to pay for the Wednesday Evening Orienteering (WEO) events:
- You can pay for each event separately, as late as the Monday before the event. Each event costs $5 per member or $10 for non-members.
- You can purchase a WEO Series Pass for $50 and pay for all the events at one time. You DO NOT have to attend all the events but if you might attend 11 or more then the WEO Season Pass is a good deal for you. If you know what events you will miss (because of vacation, for example), you can ask for a pdf of the map and run another time. There will be no WEO during the Canadian Orienteering Championships.
The family discount does not apply to the WEO Series Pass. The family discount (which you get when registering for individual events) is the better deal for very large families. The WEO Series Pass is the better deal for families of three if you plan to attend 12 + events. The WEO Series Pass provides a better discount for a family of four if you think you will all get to 15 + events
The WEO Series Pass only applies to Wednesday events; it does not apply to forest events not hosted on a Wednesday.
Registration for individual events and the WEO season pass will open soon.
NOTE: After having registered for an event, you can make changes to your course selection on the Interpodia (2M) website.
- Go to "Event Registrations" section in the menu on the left side of the screen.
- Click on the “Manage” button on the event you want to revise.
- Click view/edit registration.
- Click on the edit button on Course Selection. Revise your selection there; for example, if you won't be able to attend unexpectedly, you can choose to get a map PDF instead.
TRY-IT!
Try-It participants will also need to register as we need to know how many maps to print. You will also need to sign the online waiver. The registration link will be available soon.
After you signed up at the Google registration form, you will receive an email a day before the event to remind you of the start location. The location also can be seen on the map below.
(For one free Try-It event, you don't need to sign up for the Regular registration, but if you decide to come back for more sessions, you will need to join the FWOC Club or pay the drop-in event fee.)
What to expect?
- You will receive a brief instruction.
- You can try a couple of learning activities
- You will get a map and head out for a self-led map walk or run to try the beginner-orienteering course. All of this would take around 1 hour.
Orienteering relies on volunteers
Consider volunteering on a regular basis to help make orienteering happen in Calgary. We need volunteers to plan courses, to help with sign-in and check out, to be the "Ask Me" Volunteer (explaining the event/orienteering to the general public at the site) or to pick up controls afterwards. Plan to volunteer every fourth or sixth time you run. Please lend a hand when you can. Email [email protected] for more information or to volunteer.
