Event Report

Thank you to all participants for their enthusiasm and positivity. Thank you to Pippa M for helping and encouraging with the initial planning and Tim M and Jonathan W for helping pick up pin flags. This event was a bit of an experiment and feedback is welcome so we can make improvements for next time.

Conditions were somewhat challenging on an already challenging map. The snow made things slippery on the hills, but trails generally offered good running - probably much better with than without the snow as it would have been very muddy otherwise. We managed to start at around 4:15pm and everyone was back by 5:45pm. I am sorry if some were confused by "boxes". The handicapping worked out pretty well for the most part - well done to everyone for picking appropriate handicaps for themselves.

If you want to check out the routes some participants took, you can look at the event on MapRun. Find it in the "2024/25 TNT Series" folder, "Paskapoo Mar 25 ScoreV180". Click on the button "Show Tracks".

Paskapoo

Join us for a fun THOMASS style mass start handicapped race. Arrive by 4pm and the mass start will take place shortly after that. All 2025 FWOC Club Members are welcome. Please bring a toonie and register using the green registration button (by noon on Saturday March 29) if you are not signed up for the 2024/25 TNT season. Social will be after the race at the St Louis Bar and Grill from around 5:30pm - all welcome whether you race or not.

Location: Paskapoo Parking, Piita Rise SW (see map below)

Registration: Pre-register using the green registration button on this page if you are not already signed up for 2024/25 TNTs. On-the-day we will also have a sign-in sheet so we know exactly who is out on course. You can sign-in from 3:30pm.

Race Start: soon after 4pm

Course Closing: You must report at the finish by 6pm

Social we will meet after the race at the St Louis Bar and Grill, 300m from Paskapoo Parking

What to bring: phone/watch (if possible with MapRun installed for timing), whistle, map bag (we will have some available if you don't have one), compass (we will have some loaners available), shoes with good grip, long pants, clean shoes for after the race, water (we won't be providing refreshments), toonie if not registered for 2024/25 TNTs

Timing:

This is a mass start event, so the first person back is the winner! If you want timing you can self-time or use MapRun, which will run on a phone or Garmin/Apple watch. The map will not appear on the MapRun screen, you will need a paper map which will be handed out at the start. If you use Strava you can also upload your track to MapRun if you want to compare with other participants

Controls will be pin-flags - for fairness you should go to within touching distance of the flag

The Course will be designed to take you around 1 hour. There will be options for all levels of experience. We will provide suggested handicaps (based on age, gender and experience) and you can self-select what works for you. (see below)

Conditions: most trails are wet/muddy with some icy patches and only a few really dry spots

Course format: The course will consist of seven mandatory numbered point-to-point controls with two sections ("BOX A" and "BOX B") of score-orienteering. Each box contains 8 lettered controls. Depending on your handicap you will skip between 6 and 0 controls in each box. You can choose your own handicap. A guideline is provided below - if you think you are particularly fast or slow for your age category, adjust accordingly. Instructions will be given at the start and printed on the back of the map. The shortest option will be about 2.5km (straight-line distance) with 150m of climb. The longest will be about 6km (straight-line distance) with 300m of climb.

FWOC is offering TNTs (Toques and Training Series) again this year. You must be a current member of FWOC (or another Canadian orienteering club - COC Member) to participate. You only have to pay once through Interpodia / 2M, and you will be sent participant information including exact location each week.

Details:

  1. Days of the week. 2024-2025 TNTs will usually run on both Tuesday and Wednesday evenings from 6 pm to 8 pm. Pin flags will be set out for the duration of the event (from Tuesday at 6pm to Wednesday at 8pm). Thus, participants who would prefer to run during the day can run Wednesday morning or afternoon. NOTE: The organizer has the option of making their event a weekend event.
  2. Social Option. The organizer may host a social gathering after the event, usually either Tuesday evening or Wednesday evening. Details for this will be on the webpage and in the email to participants. The Social could be at the organizer's house or at a nearby cafe or pub.
  3. Family Pricing Option: To encourage families to participate, FWOC is planning to provide a family pricing option (save 40% for two or more members of a family who live in the same household) for the series of TNTs.
  4. Cost: $24 / person for the series (or family pricing option for family members in the same household).
  5. You need to register (and pay) in advance online.
  6. The minimum number of events is 12, and we hope to offer up to 15. You can participate in as many as you like. Even if you only get to 5 events, it's a pretty good deal!
  7. All events will be put on Maprun so you can go any day after the start of the event (up to a year).
  8. The location, PDF of the map, and maprun details will be sent via email to all registered participants.
  9. If you need a map printed for you, please indicate that on the registration form.
  10. In the new year, you will need to purchase your club membership for 2025 to continue to participate
