Map: Bowmont

Thank you to Gabrielle and Clarence for some fun courses. Thanks too to the volunteers who helped at registration: Kathryn B, Teresa and Brad G; finish: Marsha F; and control setting and pick-up: Ewan W, Marion, Bill J, Damian K, Colin S, Emilia S, Jennifer, Gabe and SOGO.

IF YOU WANT TO GUARANTEE A MAP, you MUST register by Tuesday at noon. The organizer gets the map numbers to print at that point. You can register after that BUT we can NOT ensure you will have a map. Some extras are printed.

Course Selection

When registering, there are three courses to choose from:

  • Beginner: 1.3 km with 12 controls; the easiest and shortest course, suitable for beginner orienteers and families; simple navigation; stays on trails. If you finish and it was too short, we will have some extra maps for the longer courses you can try.
  • Intermediate: 3.2 km with 15 controls; requires orienteering/navigation skills. Remember to quit your course and check back in by 7:30pm if you haven't finished before that time. It's hard to get lost on this course because the park slopes are bounded by neighbourhood streets and the river. But if you get lost, just go up the slope to the bike trail by the road and back to the start/finish.
  • Advanced: 5.5 km with 21 controls; the longest and most challenging course. This course may test your speed, endurance, route-choice skills and technical navigation skills. Remember to check back in by 7:30 pm even if you haven't finished your course!

Wednesday Evening Orienteering (WEO)

  • in-person orienteering events
  • with control flags and SI timing units in the terrain
  • from 6:30-8pm on the day of the event

There will be about 20 WEO events from April to September

  • You have to pre-register for each event. The last day to register for each Wednesday event is the Monday evening before to guarantee a map is printed for you.
  • You will need an SI stick; when registering you can choose to borrow one if you do not own one.
  • If you are unable to attend on the day of the event, you may wish to download the MapRun app and use it to run anytime up to a year afterwards.

SAFETY:

  • Please be careful especially if running near dogs.
  • you MUST check back in before the course closing time at 7:30pm. If you don't, at 7:30pm we will assume you are lost or injured and will have to initiate a lost orienteer search including calling your emergency contacts. Don't forget to check in if you leave early. Don't forget to abandon your course if needed and check in before 7:30pm. Call the number on the map if you forget.
  • this map uses sprint orienteering map symbols and rules - unlike on forest orienteering maps, you aren't allowed to cross or enter some areas which include olive-green areas, the blue river, purple cross-hatched areas and thick black lines.
