Event Information

  • This week’s WEO is taking place at MRU. For the longer courses, we will be using the mass start with forkings (butterfly loops) format, so come prepared for some fun head-to-head racing! For the Beginner course, there will be a regular point-to-point course.
  • The event lasts from 18:30 to 20:00; no one will be allowed to start after 19:30. The mass start for the Short Advanced and Long Advanced courses will take place at 19:00 (so please arrive early enough that you can get organised on time).

What is a Mass Start with Forkings?

  • This will be a mass start orienteering race where the participants race each other directly on a forked course. The forking is done by using multiple butterfly loops.
    • For those of you who don’t know what a butterfly loop is, here is an example:

    • One competitor might have to visit all the controls on the top loop first, while another competitor might have to visit all the controls on the bottom loop first. Both will visit the central ‘hub’ control three times. Ultimately they run the same distance. For instance, if you have 3 butterfly loops, then you have 8 different versions of the same course.
  • The key to racing a Farsta is to keep your calm in the chaos of the mass start and to race your own race, as you don’t know who has the same forking as you.

Meeting Location

  • The Start and Finish will be located near the East entrance to MRU, along Mount Royal Circle SW. Put in “East Entrance to Mount Royal University” when looking for directions.
  • The nearest paid parking lot is the East Parkade. Free parking is available along Lincoln Way SW if you’re willing to walk.

Map Information:

  • Scale: 1:4000
  • Contour Interval: 2m
  • Map notes:
    • Please be mindful when crossing roads, especially Richardson Way SW.
    • The Sarcee Meadows neighbourhood is home to many young families and older folks, so please watch out when running through there.

Courses:

  • Beginner: point-to-point (1.3km, 10 controls)
    • A simple point-to-point course suitable for those who are new to the sport, or just looking for an easier course. Does a loop of the main building and follows major handrails for most of the course.
    • Letter sized paper.
  • Short Advanced: Farsta (3.4km, 23 controls)
    • A shorter version of the Long Advanced course. For those who want a challenge but don’t want to run as far.
    • Legal sized paper.
    • Separate control descriptions will be provided.
  • Long Advanced: Farsta (4.0km, 30 controls)
    • As technically challenging as possible, with many direction changes and route choice legs.
    • If you’re unsure as to whether you’d be able to finish the course by 20:00, consider doing the Short Advanced course instead.
    • Legal sized paper.
    • Separate control descriptions will be provided.

Other Notes:

  • For those running the longer courses who can’t make the 19:00 mass start, you will be able to race the Farsta as a self start; just keep in mind that I will not be letting anyone start after 19:30 and you are expected to be back by 20:00.
  • Everyone must be back by 20:00, regardless of whether you’ve finished your course.

2023 Wednesday Evening Orienteering (WEO) Series

  • Regular orienteering on Wednesday evenings - this means in-person with control flags and SI units in the terrain from 6:30-8pm on the day of the event.
  • You will need an SI stick; you can borrow one from the club on the night of the event if you do not own one.
  • You will have to pre-register for the events.
    • You can pay for each session separately
    • You can sign up for the series and get a discount
  • The last day to register for each Wednesday event is the Monday evening before it to guarantee we have a map printed for you.
  • You will need to be a 2023 member of Foothills Orienteering (FWOC), a 2023 member of another Canadian orienteering club, or purchase a “day of the event membership”.
  • We will be using Maprun6 so, if you registered for the event, you can run anytime if you do not want to run on the evening of the event.
  • There will be about 20 Wednesday Evenings in the series.

NOTE: After having registered for an event, you can make changes to your course selection on the Interpodia website. Login. Go to "Event Registrations" section in the menu on the left side of the screen. Click on the “Manage” button on the event you want to revise. Click view/edit registration. Click on the edit button on Course Selection. Revise your selection there; for example, if you won't be able to attend unexpectedly, you can choose to get a map PDF instead.
