Map: Prince's Island & Crescent Heights

UPDATES:

  • PLEASE CARPOOL IF AT ALL POSSIBLE!
  • The 25% discount will be on regular priced in stock items, but not on electronics or watches - I think that will be 10%
  • The store is open to regular customers until 6 pm - so no discounts until after 6pm.
  • We will be providing one snack bar to each orienteer - a chance to try out cricket bars!!
  • Gord is going to provide some drinks, but might be a good idea to bring your own water bottle anyway.

FWOC Club Night at Gord's is back! Come and try different shoes from the test fleets of Salomon, Hoka, and Asics. Then you can run a course in Crescent Heights. Gord is a local running store owner (Gord's Running Store, 919 Centre Street NW) who has always been incredibly supportive of orienteering!! He also has thumb compasses in stock. The test shoes should be there by 5:30!

There is very limited parking at the store - and Gord then needs your plate number. But there is street parking around - just check all the signs!

Check back for updates! There will likely be fantastic deals and maybe prizes! I believe there will be a draw for Brooks shoes as the Brooks rep can't make it on this night! Also, Gord is offering a 25% discount on regular priced items (not electronics or watches) for club members!

The longer courses will be off trail, and the Bluffs are quite steep - so shoes with good traction recommended, especially if it is raining! Or try out some shoes! If you are using your own traction shoes, bring a spare dry pair for inside after your run.

There is an area that is out of bounds as the slope has experienced subsidence. It is shown as Out Of Bounds on the map and you shouldn't need to go through there! But be aware! And remember that olive green is also out-of-bounds!

Teresa has been extending the sprint standard map - another reason to come out for the first event of the WEO season!! The map will be 1:4,000 with 3m contours.

Note that everything should be set up by 5:30 (no deals etc before the store closes at 6) - so you will have lots of time afterwards to hang out at Gord's!! And maybe win a prize or get a good deal! And enjoy some snacks!

There will be 3 courses:

  • short and fairly easy (Young children should be supervised - this is not a TD1 course) 1.2k only one short climb of ~18m! There will be road crossings. And be aware of cyclists.
  • intermediate: some off-trail on the Bluff. 2k and ~60 m of climb. Road crossings. Cyclists.
  • Long: ~4k with ~105m of climb. There will be a map flip, using the new symbol!! And may not seem like a 'sprint' course...! Actual distance will be more like 5k. Road crossings. Cyclists.
