Organizers: Marsha Fehr (Event Director), Bogi Gyorfi (Host)

Map: Edworthy Park

Thank you to all the wonderful volunteers who helped put on this event: course planner, Marsha, Kitty (control setting and pickup), Marion (control setting), Tory and Evelyn (check-in), Joe V (organizing control pickup and picking up), Sadie, Lauren, Jiri, and Bogi (control pickup).

This week's WEO event takes place at Edworthy Park. Start and Finish are on the south side of the river, at SW corner of the washroom building. NOTE: This building was not open as of May 15th, but porta potties are available.

Course Planner's Notes:

  • Near the start and finish you will be crossing roads and a parking lot, please watch out for cars.
  • All courses cross the train tracks and you MUST cross at the level crossing point. The train tracks are off-limits.
  • The top (south) part of the park is a dog walking park; please be mindful of the dogs and their walkers and other park users.
  • There are some encampments; courses have been adjusted to avoid the ones that were set up during the planning stages.
  • Vegetation has grown and and other sections have died back since the map was made. Some updates have been made.
  • This map is not able to be georeferenced so there will be no maprun with this event.

Courses: Note the climb on the advanced courses.

  • Beginner Course: 1.8 km mostly north of the tracks. You will need to be careful to keep your map oriented!
  • Intermediate Course: 2.6 km. 30m of climb
  • Advanced Short 1 & 2: ~4.2km. 95 m of climb. The courses are forked so you have the freedom to focus on your own course.
  • Advanced Long 1 & 2: 5.3 km. 125 m of climb.Forked courses for the same reason.

Try-It participants need to register using the above link only, as we need to know how many maps to print and to sign the online waiver.

After you signed up at the Google registration form, you will receive an email a day before the event to remind you of the start location. The location also can be seen on the map below. Any questions for Try it: [email protected]

(For one free Try-It event, you don't need to sign up for the Regular registration ( green button), but if you decide to come back for more sessions, you will need to join the FWOC Club or pay the non-member event fee.)

What to expect?

  • You will receive a brief instruction.
  • You can try a couple of learning activities
  • You will get a map and head out for a self-led map walk or run to try the beginner-orienteering course. All of this would take around 1 hour.
  • No previous experience is necessary, join us for this fun walk to explore Calgary's parks!

Wednesday Evening Orienteering (WEO) Event

  • Regular orienteering on Wednesday evenings - this means in-person with control flags and SI units in the terrain from 6:30-8pm on the day of the event.
  • At this point we are anticipating 20 events but this number is dependent on volunteer course planners.
  • You will need an SI stick; you can borrow one from the club on the night of the event if you do not own one.
  • You will have to pre-register for the events.
  • The last day to register for each Wednesday event is the Monday evening before it to guarantee we have a map printed for you.
  • You will need to be a 2024 member of Foothills Orienteering (FWOC), a 2024 member of another Canadian orienteering club, or pay the non-member event fee.
  • We will be using Maprun so, if you registered for the event, you can run anytime if you do not want to run on the evening of the event.
  • There will be about 20 Wednesday Orienteering Evenings in the series.

Wednesday Orienteering Payment Options

There are two ways to pay for the Wednesday Evening Orienteering (WEO) events:

  1. You can pay for each event separately, as late as the Monday before the event. Each event costs $5 per member or $10 for non-members.
  2. You can purchase a WEO Series Pass for $50 and pay for all the events at one time. You DO NOT have to attend all the events but if you might attend 11 or more then the WEO Season Pass is a good deal for you. If you know what events you will miss (because of vacation, for example), you can ask for a pdf of the map and run another time. There will be no WEO during the Canadian Orienteering Championships.

The family discount does not apply to the WEO Series Pass. The family discount (which you get when registering for individual events) is the better deal for very large families. The WEO Series Pass is the better deal for families of three if you plan to attend 12 + events. The WEO Series Pass provides a better discount for a family of four if you think you will all get to 15 + events

The WEO Series Pass only applies to Wednesday events; it does not apply to forest events not hosted on a Wednesday.

Registration for individual events and the WEO season pass will open soon.

NOTE: After having registered for an event, you can make changes to your course selection on the Interpodia (2M) website.

  1. Login.
  2. Go to "Event Registrations" section in the menu on the left side of the screen.
  3. Click on the “Manage” button on the event you want to revise.
  4. Click view/edit registration.
  5. Click on the edit button on Course Selection. Revise your selection there; for example, if you won't be able to attend unexpectedly, you can choose to get a map PDF instead.
