Course Details

The Canmore Nordic Center is situated on the forested lower slopes of Mt Rundle and has an extensive network of trails used for Nordic skiing and mountain biking. Four different courses are offered with an increasing level of Technical Difficulty (TD):

  • Novice Course: 2.3km, 10 controls with 55m of climb. Easier navigation (TD2) as all controls will be placed along distinct line features, such as trails and fences.
  • Intermediate Course: 3.3km, 11 controls with 80m of climb. More challenging navigation (TD3), with controls set on prominent features (eg. a small hill) near to distinct line features, such as a trail.
  • Short Advanced Course: 3.9km, 16 controls with 125m of climb (TD5)
  • Long Advanced Course: 5.3 km, 21 controls with 200m of climb (TD5)

Both Advanced courses will require advanced technical navigation (TD5; the hardest Technical Difficulty of 5) where most controls are located on small features away from trails or linear features. Careful off-trail navigation though the forest will be required to find controls on small features (such as a boulder or a small hill).

Map & Course Notes

  • Map scale: 1:7500 (map recently updated in 2024 & 2025), Contour interval 5m.
  • The "Big Bear" Disk Golf competition is happening over the weekend at CNC and we are required to keep away from the frisbee-throwing fairways. The entire Disk Golf course is marked as "out-of-bounds" on the map and courses have been designed to keep you well away from this area.
  • Please be aware that mountain bikers will be active on the single-track trails and take extra caution on these trails.
  • The advanced courses will cross the paved roller-ski trail; take care when crossing this trail as roller-skis have limited braking ability!
  • The advanced courses will also cross the 30km/h access road in to the Nordic Center; please use caution when crossing.

B Event

B events are more formal than C events.

  • There is a more formal start procedure.
  • These events are timed, using SI.
  • There is usually a wider selection of courses than a (Wednesday) C event.
  • There will be age-classes in championship B events.
