Big thanks for all the volunteers for a very successful event: Miles, Patrick, Luke, Nicki, Charlotte, Mark, Anita, Liza, Saira, Lyen, Terence, Manya, and Brad

Organiser Notes:

Welcome to orienteering at the Canmore Nordic Centre!
This event is especially for all the trail runners in the valley who’ve ever said, “Oh, that sounds cool,” when I talk about what I do.

*This event is capped at 75 entries*

Courses on Offer:

  • Long Advanced: 5.8km
All the technical challenge, all the distance. This course is for experienced orienteers who know what they’re doing.
  • Short Advanced: 3.9km
A technical challenge in a smaller package. Ideal for those who want the mental workout without the extra mileage.
  • Long Intermediate: 5.5km
Mostly on trails, but with controls that require some off-trail navigation. Great for confident trail runners wanting a longer introduction to orienteering.
  • Short Intermediate: 3.7km
Similar to the long intermediate, just shorter. A solid choice for beginner adults.
  • Novice: 2.5km
A gentle introduction to orienteering. Perfect for kids or those new to reading maps.

A Note on Course Distances:

Course lengths are measured as the straight-line distance between controls, not the distance you’ll actually run. Expect to cover more ground, especially if you miss a turn or take the scenic route!

Timeline:

  • 5:45pm: Join us for a brief “Intro to Orienteering” session at 5:45 PM. If it’s your first time, try to arrive in time for this!
  • 5:55pm: There will also be a quick bear spray use lesson at 5:55 PM, so you can feel confident and prepared on the course.
  • 6:00pm: Start! Early start to allow a little extra time.

Note: Bear spray is mandatory when out on the courses at the Nordic Centre.

Post-Event Social:
Bring a chair and a snack and stick around for some relaxed social time afterwards.

IF YOU WANT TO GUARANTEE A MAP, you MUST register by Tuesday, August 5th at 12:00pm (noon). The organizer gets the map numbers to print at that point. You can register after that BUT we can NOT ensure you will have a map. Some extras are printed. For those of you who are not a member of a Canadian orienteering club, you will need to register as a non-member.

Wednesday Evening Orienteering (WEO)

  • in-person orienteering events
  • with control flags and SI timing units in the terrain
  • from 6:30-8pm on the day of the event

There will be about 20 WEO events from April to September

  • You have to pre-register for each event. The last day to register for each Wednesday event is the Monday evening before to guarantee a map is printed for you.
  • You will need an SI stick; when registering you can choose to borrow one if you do not own one.
  • If you are unable to attend on the day of the event, you may wish to download the MapRun app and use it to run anytime up to a year afterwards.

Course Selection

When registering, there are three courses to choose from:

  • Beginner: the easiest and shortest course, suitable for beginner orienteers and families; simple navigation; approx 1.5-2kms. Stays on trails
  • Intermediate: requires orienteering/navigation skills; approx 2-3.5kms
  • Advanced: the longest and potentially most challenging course (for some city maps this course may be called Long Intermediate); approx 4 kms (or more)
