Registration:
You must pre-register by noon on the Tuesday before. The organizer gets the map numbers to print at that point. You can register after that or change which course(s) you will do, but we only print a few extras so can't guarantee you will get a course map other then one you pre-registered for.
- You will need an SI stick; when registering you can choose to borrow one if you do not own one.
- If you are unable to attend on the day of the event, you may wish to download the MapRun app and use it to run anytime up to a year afterwards.
Course Selection:
For this event, there are 3 courses you can register for:
- Beginner: 12 control checkpoints in 500m. The easiest and shortest course, suitable for beginner orienteers and families; easier navigation; entirely within a small neighbourhood park with enough trees and objects to keep it interesting. If you finish and it was too short, we will have some extra maps for the longer courses you can try. If you found it was really really short, maybe you didn't notice the 2nd half of the course is on the back side of the paper.
- Intermediate: 23 controls in 2.5km. Requires orienteering/ navigation skills. This course crosses a few roads and off-leash dog areas so young children should be accompanied by adults. The course starts out easy and the navigation gets a bit more challenging as you go. Remember to quit your course and check back in by 7:30pm if you haven't finished before that time. It's hard to get lost on this course because the park slopes are bounded by neighbourhood streets and the river. But if you get lost, just go up the slope to the road and back to the start/finish.
- Advanced: 13 controls in 5 km. The first half is mostly a maze through curvy somewhat hilly neighbourhood streets and the second half has some longer park legs and interesting control locations. This course may challenge your speed, endurance, and route-choice skills more than your technical navigation skills so it is more like a long intermediate course with some twists:
- parts of some streets have been shown as out-of-bounds on the map to force to you make more complicated route choices. You will not see any indication of these out-of-bounds areas in the real world, but you aren't allowed to go through them (or around them on sidewalks or lawns).
- there is a map flip part-way through your course; the second half of the course is printed on the back.
After the event, you can upload and compare GPS tracks with other participants.
Safety:
- the Intermediate and Advanced courses cross roads and off-leash dog areas. Stop and yell loudly if being approached by a dog. The courses have been planned to minimize time spent in these areas but please be careful especially if running near dogs.
- you MUST MUST MUST check back in before the course closing time at 7:30pm. If you don't, at 7:30pm we will assume you are lost or injured and will have to initiate a lost orienteer search including calling your emergency contacts. Don't forget to check in if you leave early. Don't forget to abandon your course if needed and check in before 7:30pm. Call the number on the map if you forget.
- this map uses sprint orienteering map symbols and rules - unlike on forest orienteering maps, you aren't allowed to cross or enter some areas which include olive-green areas, the blue river if bounded by a black line, purple cross-hatched areas, thick purple lines and thick black lines. Your map will show the following reminder:
- if your blood sugar gets low, note on the map below that Village Ice Cream is very close to the Start/Finish.
