Map: Canmore Nordic Centre (ISOM)

Thanks to everyone who joined us at the Canmore Nordic Center today for a fantastic warm, sunny day of Ski-Orienteering.

Thanks also to the volunteers: Organizers (Mark G & Anita B), Miles T (check-in & newcomer assistance) and Trevor K (mega-control pick-up!)

We are also very appreciative of the support we got from Canmore Nordic Centre, including the grooming staff who overnight managed to groom all the trails that we used today, making our event more fun and much safer!

=====

Come and enjoy Ski-Orienteering at the Canmore Nordic Center (CNC). You may have skied these trails recreationally, but navigating them with an orienteering map can be an fun new experience!

CNC does not permit walking or snowshoeing on its trails, so participants in this ski-orienteering event must be on Nordic skis (using classic or skate technique).

Please remember that CNC will be busy with recreational skiers who will be skiing on the same trails we are using for this event. You are responsible to ski in control, with care, and give way to all recreational skiers. Let's keep everybody safe!

Please Read all Event Details Below:

Course Details:

For this ski-orienteering event, participants will be mostly navigating along groomed ski trails and the controls are all located next to groomed trails. The CNC has a very dense network of ski trails, and the navigation challenge is to decide which trails to take and to make quick route decisions as you ski past many trail junctions. There are three courses being offered:

  1. Novice Course: 2.7 km, 9 controls with 40m of climb on undulating wide ski trails. Map Scale is 1:5000
  2. Intermediate Course: 5.8 km, 12 controls with approx 200m of climb. Map Scale is 1:12500. A longer course with more climb and some steeper ski trails.
  3. Advanced Course: 8 km, 15 controls, approx 260m of climb. Map Scale is 1:12500. A long course with quite a bit of climb and descent on steeper trails. More controls located in areas of dense trail complexity to make navigation challenging.

Note that the course distances listed above are based on the the straight-line distances between all controls; you will typically need to ski a few more km than shown above to visit all the controls along the winding ski trails.

Map & Course Notes:

  • Courses and courses lengths may need minor adjustments closer to the event date, depending on snow conditions.
  • The biathlon shooting ski lane is marked as Out-Of-Bounds. You can ski past the new Biathlon building, but do not ski where biathletes are using firearms.
  • Note that active logging is continuing at CNC through winter for the new eastern fireguard. The affected area is shown as permanent out-of-bounds on the map.
  • The map is based on our foot-orienteering map of CNC (ISOM) that has been partially converted to the ski-orienteering map standard (ISSkiOM 2019). Trails that are usually groomed for skiing are shown as green solid lines. Summer trails (that may be covered in snow) are also shown on map with black dashed lines, but these are not recommended for ski travel due to the very thin, variable snow depth.
