Note: the site is east of Indus, Alberta 25-30 min from South Calgary. 45ish min from Central. 45-60 min from NW Calgary. Please use Google Maps to use the most efficient route to the parking area at the McKinnon Flats Boat Ramp:

Pre-registration is required. Maps will be printed the Tuesday afternoon before the event so you must register before then to ensure we have enough maps.

  • Course Selection

Note that only the Novice course stays in the "Flats" part of "McKinnon Flats"! If you want to change the course you have registered for, please edit your registration for this event at https://2mev.com/my_pages/event-regs or email [email protected]

  • Novice: the easiest and shortest course, suitable for beginner orienteers and families; simple navigation; at least 1.6km and 30m climb, mostly on trails. 1:5000 scale.
  • Intermediate: requires orienteering/navigation skills; at least 3.4km and 130m climb traversing up the Bow River valley walls. 1:7500 scale.
  • Advanced: At least 5.3km and 210m climb traversing up the valley wall. There will be an option to skip two controls to make a Short Advanced course of at least 4km and 160m climb. 1:10,000 scale (a few 1:7500 Short Advanced maps will be available on request).

Brand new map! All courses visit the ranch house ruins. The Intermediate and Advanced courses also visit cool sandstone hoodoos, cliffs, forest, marshes, and steep prairie escarpment.

SAFETY: Some to the hills are relatively steep, with gopher holes to boot. Be careful with your footing. There are some steep cliffs and embankments that could be hazards, stay well back from the edge. There may be some remnant barbed wire from old fences. Ticks are prevalent in June, wear long legged pants and tuck them into your socks.

Cell phone coverage is spotty in the valley. That means that if injured you may need to climb to the top of the valley to get cell coverage. Furthermore course planner and controller may not receive your calls if they are at the Start although they will have an emergency satellite beacon.

Volunteering:

Each WEO event takes about 10 volunteers. We really need our membership to support these evenings in order to keep these WEOs happening. It is a great way to meet more members, and some roles help improve your orienteering skills! If you would like to help out in any way - no experience necessary - please reach out to [email protected] or click on the Volunteer Link below.
