Learn about Winter Orienteering (TNTs)
Winter Orienteering - Toques 'n Training Events (TNTs)
Winter orienteering is a great way to keep your skills up while getting in some fitness and fresh air and staying connected!
How are TNTs different from regular orienteering?
- Only one course, set at an intermediate level.
- Goes from Tuesday 6 pm to Wednesday 8 pm at night. Participants can choose anytime during that window to run the course.
- Set anywhere not just places we have maps. You can make a map of your neighbourhood (how-to information can be found on the website under Resources: Self-Guided Activities) and plan one there!
- You have to find features in the terrain and they could be marked with pin flags, but the features might be snowmen or fire hydrants! The choice is up to the organizer!
- Bring your own map bag.
- Sign up to get a printed map.
- If you run in the evening, you will need a headlamp.
- The location, PDF of the map, and maprun details will be sent via email to all registered participants. The website will indicate a neighborhood but not an address.
How are TNTS and regular orienteering the same?
- Use a map to find "controls" in the terrain.
- Go at speed or the speed you are comfortable with given the conditions.
- We try to include an evening social component where you can compare times and route choices with other members of the club or just visit.
- Registration will open on Nov 10.
- You must be a current member of FWOC or another Canadian orienteering club.
- Most events will be put on Maprun so you can go any day after the start of the event (up to a year).
TNT pricing
Individual FWOC members pay $24, and the TNT series will include at least 10 but up to 15 TNTs! To encourage families to participate (especially in this time of increasing costs), FWOC has decided to provide a discount of 40% for two or more members of a family who live in the same household for the series of TNTs. A family of two or more can apply the discount code to get 40% off their registration. A family of two will pay $28.80 (+fees); this could be a couple but also a Dad and his child whether the child is a minor or adult living in the same house. A family of three will pay $43.20 (+fees) regardless of the composition of the family, provided they all live in the same house. To get the family discount when you register two or more members of your family, write: TNT Family Discount in the Promotion / Coupon Code box in the upper right-hand corner when you are checking out. Every participant must be registered in advance.
Plan to run TNTs starting mid-November. You will need to renew your membership on Jan 1 to continue running the TNTs in the new year.
